Description

Kurenai kept her gaze fixed on the wilting grass she was crushing beneath her, mostly because that way she could pretend it wasn't true.

The nightmare didn't start there. It began further down, at the lip of the gentle slope where a scattering of weeds gave was to the fields, and burnt earth.

Kurenai knew how it felt to die. She'd dreamed of death so often it became a faithful companion, both the death she dealt to others and the blurry grey of oblivion somewhere in her own future. No loger looming, but rather eliciting mild curiosity and a selfish greed for life at the same time. But she'd never imagined this wilting of hope, or the sudden death inside that came from guilt and a horror too large to comprehend.

Because this wasn't,
couldn't be home. Home was sunny and verdant, not this silent graveyard that led to the charred stumps of buildings and the mutilated mountain face beyond. And inbetween, stretching obscenely towards the horizon, the blackened earth and wooden crosses, and crows.

Death was one thing, but this was the utter demise of meaning.

Kurenai whimpered, a small sound between a gasp and a sob, and felt muscles clench convulsively beneath her hand. A fresh spurt of blood welled from the wound in her side, trickling through her fingers.

"Genma..." Maybe he could make sense of this, she mused feverishly.

He came to a crouching halt beside her with only a fraction of his usual speed. She could feel the warmth of his hand, hovering just above her abused skin and there was a little comfort to be drawn from that even through the numbness. But his gaze was fixed ahead, tired eyes widening -- first with battle-ready alarm, and then further in dawning horror.

We should have been there, Kurenai thought, knowing it was a lie. But now... They were stuck with life and saddled with the memories, and she couldn't imagine a heavier burden.

The first time I've written something for a picture instead of the other way around... This should be the first in a series of AU paintings where a group of Jounin return from a desastrous mission to find Konoha village destroyed and only a few survivors left.

The promised close-up is
here. :)

A very beautiful and inspiring picture! Those two are rarely shown together, a surprising combination, but a good one. I love that you choose the elder generation and the more darker theme of the shinobi world for this. The realistic style fits this extremly well. Everything looks a bit blurry except for the protagonist. The graves in the background add to the atmosphere (though they don't actually use crosses in the naruto!universe, I think.) I think what captured me most were the colours of the sky, though.
All in all, amazing work. Thank you for sharing.
