Artist's Comments
His wings twitched, the slight motion rippling through space-time as he rubbed his forehead with a weary sigh. He barely felt the symbols of his power emerge, tracing their paths down his arm and chest in curling lines that sliced his body open for the wandering dead.
He didn't collect souls. They came to him, drawn like matter to a gravity well. They were his charge -- and his burden, too. But for a while now there had been something lacking, missing pieces in the puzzle of his own tormented spirit. Mere slivers of void they were in the near-infinity of his essence, tiny scraps of nothing where something should be and yet they tore at the very fabric of him, demanding attention. Their silence screamed louder than their voices ever could, asking questions he had no answer to. Souls didn't just vanish. But these had, and still he failed to find them while their absence ate at him, devouring him from the inside out. |
